The deadline for fall semester admission and for a graduate assistantship is January 15; for spring semester admission it is November 1. (Note: Applicants for spring admission are not considered for graduate assistantships.)

-$40 nonrefundable application fee payable to Texas State University
-official transcripts from every college or university you have attended must be sent by U. S. mail directly from the institutions to: The Graduate College, Texas State University, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX 78666
To the Creative Writing Department
-one PDF file, saved with your last name and your genre (e.g. Smith, Poetry,) that contains your creative portfolio. It must include -- for fiction: 2 short stories or up to 25 pages of a novel; for poetry: 12 to 15 poems; for fiction/creative nonfiction: one short story or brief novel excerpt and one creative nonfiction essay. Please use your last name and genre as the subject header of your e-mail as well. E-mail your portfolio to: mfaportfolio@txstate.edu.
-A cover letter that includes your name, address, and telephone number must be typed into the e-mail to which you've attached your creative portfolio.
--Letters of recommendation are not necessary if you are applying for admission only.

Graduate Assistantship Application
An applicant for a graduate assistantship must submit by U.S. mail the following to the Director of the MFA program: a completed application form for an IA/TA assistantship and a completed Texas State Employment Application form (both forms are available above); three letters of recommendation; and a Statement of Purpose (maximum of 500 words) about your potential for and interest in teaching college first-year composition. Send to: Tom Grimes, Director, MFA Program in Creative Writing, Department of English, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX 78666 (Note: You are not required to apply for an assistantship.)
